Symposium on Nutritional Approaches to Digestive Health
On the 2nd October 2008, a one day symposium entitled “Nutritional Approaches to Digestive Health - Latest Developments” was held at The Royal Society of Medicine (RSM), London, United Kingdom.
The event, which was organised by the RSM and chaired by Dr Julian Stowell, Science Director, Danisco Sweeteners Division, included key speakers from around the world, who are experts in the area of Digestive Health.
A wide range of topics were reviewed, including:
- Overview of dietary fibre and health, Prof. Judith Buttriss, British Nutrition Foundation
- Overview of Prebiotics, Prof. Glenn Gibson, University of Reading
- Overview of Probiotics, Dr. Philippe Marteau, Lariboisiere Hospital, Paris
- Application of prebiotics in infant formulae, Dr. Guenther Boehm, Sophia Children’s Hospital, Erasmus University Rotterdam
- A food company perspective on probiotics , Dr. Jean-Michel Antoine, Danone
Two presentations were given by Danisco including one by Dr. Arthur Ouwehand, from the Danisco Health & Nutrition Research Centre in Kantvik Finland, who presented an “Overview of synbiotics”; and also Dr Julian Stowell, who presented the “Scientific substantiation of a new prebiotic”, using Litesse® (polydextrose) as a case study.
The event was well attended by more than 100 people from different backgrounds including industry, universities and the medical profession, and all in all it was very well received.
