Danisco Introduces "Better-For-You" Fruit Snack Prototypes
For product development experts looking for confectionery snacks that address consumers' desires for more healthful snacks that provide vital nutrients in a convenient form, Danisco has developed a line of fruit snack prototypes offering grab-and-go nutrition in a unique combination of indulgence and fortification. These prototypes were created using products from the Danisco portfolio, including GRINDSTED® Pectin, Danisco flavours, and Litesse® Ultra™ Polydextrose, a single ingredient that provides multiple benefits to formulations.
Donna Brooks, Regional Director for Danisco, reports that this new line of pectin concepts is designed for consumption during various parts of the day, and also target gender and age preferences. The complete line includes snack concepts for breakfast, mid-morning, lunch, after school, afternoon, evening, and dessert. A weekender concept specifically created for active adults rounds out the offering.
Each prototype features GRINDSTED® Pectin, which functions in a wide range of processing conditions and enables manufacturers to create multiple shapes, fillings and textures. Novel flavour combinations of blueberry and yoghurt, apple and carrot, sweet apple and caramel as well as attributes such as 25% Reduced Sugar and One Portion of Fruit applications are among the concepts presented in the "Better-for-you" line.
One notable formulation includes Danisco's Litesse® Ultra™ Polydextrose used in combination with Danisco's pectin and Danisco flavours. This particular prototype – identified as an ideal afternoon snack - contains Litesse® to add prebiotic fibre, and is low in calories. Other prototypes include on-the-go breakfast and lunch alternatives such as a granola and fruit layered breakfast bar and a fruit and vegetable offering that is boosted with extra fortification. The varied prototypes are targeted to children, adult women and active adults.
Ms. Brooks said, "Nutrition and taste are not the only benefits that our pectin snacks offer. Their use mirrors the factors that are driving the "Better-for-you" market. The prototypes we have created meet the demands of time-challenged consumers who want convenience but are well aware of their nutritional needs. The desire for appealing, familiar and satisfying confections in convenient grab-and-go options, that also deliver nutritional benefits are key to discriminating consumers who want it all."
